How Technology is Influencing Us

Technology is changing the world around us day-by-day. In our classrooms, our social life, and our home life. I believe technology in the classroom is a great thing, when used correctly. I recently learned about video chatting (for lack of a better term) experts on certain subjects and students can get a real-life interaction with people they can ultimately look up to and ask questions to for better understanding, rather than asking a teacher, whom is not an expert in said field, and may not have the answer. Having access to an expert, in the classroom, can and will make for better understanding and since they are in the classroom the teacher then can help the point get across to the students if the expert does not know how to word their lectures for the age group.
Technology is taking a hold on the majority of people's lives. I do not think it is a bad thing, because now families and friends can keep in touch with one another even from great distances. I do believe it can have a negative because people do not use the privilege we are given to its best use. An example is, when a child is crying or being loud or just annoying the family or their parents, it is easy to hand them a tablet or a phone and tell them to go to their rooms, because at least then they are quiet. Kids also have unlimited access to games whether they have a PS4 or a Xbox, which is also an advantage to some parents because then their kids are "out of their way" while the parents are busy. It is easy to see and say, these kids now do not play outside. While that is true, one must also think to themselves, do the parents ever say "hey, you are too cooped up inside. Maybe go in the backyard and play." It is important to take into account the part that authoritative figures can play in a child's life when it comes to technology.
I also believe that technology is making it more difficult to have a face-to-face conversation with others, so a 'wall' is being built between human beings, which is leading to more socially awkward people, not just children. And that is a big negative. Another negative when it comes to communication is, we have people at our finger tips, therefore not giving us time to cool down and collect our thoughts before sending that mean email, text message, Facebook message, etc. People are getting their feelings hurt and self-esteem lowered because we have these communication devices at our hands, but do not think before we send messages.

  1. Technology is a great tool to keep in touch with family members, but it is sad to say that technology has taken over kid’s play time. Kids are so attached to devices that they do not play outside anymore. Like you said, sometimes devices are a way to keep the children busy for parents while they have something to do. I think that children should be playing outside more, but we as parents are the ones to control that. If we let our children be on devices all day, that is all that they will want to do. If we put limits on their devices, we can get them to have more playtime with other children and interact more with their family.

  2. I see your concern on all the negative outcomes about technology and how is changing the world. The danger that is out there with all the cyber actions that is driving youth to have any social skills; lack of showing emotions and feelings; ending with depression and sad outcomes like suicide is here. As parents it is our job to be more observant of any situation with our kids.
I think our help in all this as future teachers is to start building technology awareness in our students. Don't you think?

  3. I agree with you. Technology is definitely a good thing when used correctly. I love the fact that I can talk to family that is across the U.S. and be able to see their faces. With that being said, technology has totally taking over kids lives and I do not put the kids at fault. I believe it is the parents fault for allowing their kids to get away with it. Technology is definitely what we make it.

  4. I love when you mention about how technology can facilitate the communication! My parents and friends back in Taiwan still can see us if we skype or even on Facabook--the convenient part from the Technology! on the other hand, our communication also gets "limited" by all the great technology--people stop interacting and rather communicate via online.
